Manual Handling is very important subject for HSE Professionals to train the worker how to lift the heavy load on the workplace.

Handheld is very common in the construction industry as a means of transferring goods. Although mechanical means are available, this is not always the case. The risk of injury can be reduced by training and the use of effective lifting and management techniques.

Training Focus

➤ Training should focus on the following areas:

➤ Common injuries

➤ Causes of injuries

➤ Manual lifting editing

➤ PPE requirements

➤ Other requirements

Types Of Injury Caused by handling Accidents

Common injuries

➤ Strains and sprains in joints and muscles
➤ The lines and bones are broken
➤ Smooth discs, tears and hernias
➤ Cutting and abrasion
➤ Back injuries
➤ Crush injury (fingers, toes)

Cause of Injury

➤ Wrong posture (sudden movement, twisting, shaking)
➤ Heavy loads (overload)
➤ Rough terrain (sharp edges, jagged, fragments, guesses)
➤ Crush (heavy loads, no wedges)
➤ Lack of information (weight of burden)
➤ Visual vision (moving backwards, blocking view)

Planning before the Manual Lift

➤  In planning a manual lift, many factors need to be considered;
➤  Increasing capacity
➤  Type of load
➤  Kinetic method considerations
➤  Holding a load
➤  Carrying the burden
➤  Provision of hand hooks
➤  Raising the team
➤  Use of rollers

 Planning before Manual Lift

➣ A: Lifting power
➤ When raising any load, we should consider the following:
➤ Human body, age, status, training, strategies.
➤ Load type (compact, wide, etc.)
➤ The weight of the load
➤ The technique of moving Load

➣ B: Type of load

The way the load is packed has a lot to do with its management:
➤ If the load is heavy, it can be carried in bits (50kg by 10 kg bits rather than a single weight of 50kg at once).
➤ Lack of lifting / handling points

➣ C: Kinetic method of lifting

This includes the appropriate posture to  Manual lift:

➤ Feet Positioning while Manual Lifting the Load
➤ Flexible Knees
➤ Straight back
➤ Keeping the arms close to the body
➤ Grip on the Load while  Manual Lifting
➤ Chin in, head up during Manual Lifting
Use the Body Load to carry the Load

➣ D: Lifting the Load

➤Walking should be smooth and natural (to avoid twisting, twisting).
➤ Legs Should be straight, straight back).
➤ A direct look at the direction of movement.

➣ E: Carrying the load

➤ Hold tight, close to the body, move straight to load.
➤ Keep the loading center with gravity on the body.
➤ when lift the load you should see the clear the load.
➤The grip should not be changed when the load is already lifted.
➤ If the grip needs to change, load the support first.

➣ F: Use of roller devices
➤ If the load type allows for rolling, swing or pushing.
➤Install the steel pipes under the load and the load is lifted
➤ There precaution measure  should  be taken by workers installing steel pipes to avoid injury to the hands.

➣ G: Mechanical Options
➤In all manual handling, always consider the option of secure equipment
Lifting.
➤Pulleys
➤Fork lifts
➤Cranes
➤Others

Why back pain happens?

Pain & Suffering caused  by Back Injures

Limited Mobility            limited to physical activity
Decreased Activity         cannot move around too much
Change in life style        not going to be able to do all the things  you  used to be able to do.
Depression                      from the above changes

Chemical Manual Handling
Prior to the administration and use of chemicals, one must read and understand the manufacturer's instructions for MSDS, the details of which are included but are limited to:

➤ Chemical formulation
➤ Exposure limit
➤ Final requirements
➤ Safe management system
➤ Steps for first aid
➤ The need to dispose of
➤The need for PPE
➤ Emergencies

PPE Requirements

➤ Protective helmets - Prevent accidental knocks.
➤ Shirts with long sleeves - Protects against skin damage
➤ Steel toe Boots - Protects saliva, toes, feet, sharp objects
➤ Hand gloves - Protects palms, fingers from scratches and cuts

Prior to any personal lifting exercise, the following must be done
Examine manual management to identify and minimize potential risks to this job

Where possible, eliminate the need to do manual labor

When risk is identified, use mitigation measures to reduce the risk

Consideration should be given to limiting the weight to be lifted by hand, recommended 25kg as the size for one person

Injuries related to the worst lift Back injuries.

Take good care of your back at all times to help prevent painful and crippling injuries.

You can protect yourself!
